The inn "Zum deutschen Haus"
More than 100 years ago...
...it used to smell of fresh bread rolls here, but now the atmosphere at rock concerts is electric. The former inn “Zum Deutschen Haus” at Lütgendortmunder Straße 43 is now home to the “Musiktheater Piano.” From the outside, the building looks like a typical early 20th-century inn. Inside, however, visitors are greeted by impressive Art Nouveau rooms—an architectural style that is rarely found in Dortmund today.
When approaching the “Piano” via Lütgendortmunder Straße, the unusually large volume of the building immediately catches the eye. At second glance, however, the unusual structure of the building and a few facade details that are obviously older are confusing. An inscription above the courtyard gate provides a first clue as to how these inconsistencies might be connected: “1873. Wilh. Roggenkämper. 1903.” It is clear that the “Zum Deutschen Haus” inn was not built in one go.
The architectural monument
In 1873...
...the eastern part of today's historic building was constructed as a bakery and inn called “Zum deutschen Haus” with a classicist gable. Thirty years later, it was decided that the thriving inn needed to be expanded. The bakery was abandoned, the inn was greatly enlarged, and the decoration of the old façade was adapted to the new building. A new large hall with a stage and balcony provided space for all kinds of performances at family and club celebrations.
At the end of the 1960s the demand for the inn declined. Many people spent more and more evenings at home after television had become part of everyday life. In the 1970s, part of the estate was therefore used as a student residence.
It was not until today's owners woke the magnificent Art Nouveau hall from its slumber. As a venue for music events, especially the jazz, blues and rock scene, the piano is now known and loved far beyond Dortmund.
